Royal Wolverhampton 50th Anniversary Cover

Royal Wolverhampton School Lodge has issued the following press release:

Bro. John Chapman, formerly of the Bletchley Park Post Office, has been pleased to assist The Royal Wolverhampton School Masonic Lodge to produce a cover and smiler stamp celebrating the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the Lodge on the 18th September 2017.

The Royal School Wolverhampton has a long and proud history of helping young people on the road of life. It owes both its existence and ethos to the good-hearted and pioneering Victorian philanthropist, Mr John Lees. A successful merchant and Wolverhampton resident, Mr Lees first opened the school in 1850 to provide a secure home and schooling for the city’s many orphans, brought about by the cholera epidemic that was rampant in the mid-1800s. Now an independently-run Free School The Royal, continues to offer ‘education for all’ welcoming children from all social backgrounds and creeds.

The school has long held close ties with the Freemasons, with Masonic bodies being amongst the early subscribers to the school charity. This has continued down the many years of the school’s existence, with many of the school’s Governors being active Masons, including the current Chairman. The link between the school and the Freemasons was firmly cemented when the Royal Wolverhampton School Masonic Lodge, No. 8170, was formally consecrated on the 18th September 1967.

The cover itself carries an aerial image of the frontage of the Royal School with the school crest in the centre. The stamp on the right features a detail of the beautiful stained glass inside the school chapel, which is carried over to the design for the reverse of the envelope.

John continues his association with the Isle of Man Post Office, with the inclusion of one of their Freemasonry Tercentenary stamps on the top left of the cover, with a special IOM cancellation.

The reverse of the envelope also carries the UGLE tercentenary logo and an image of the fabled King George VI ‘Masonic’ victory stamp. The Lodge No. 8170 for the Royal Wolverhampton School is displayed below a Square & Compass motif.

All profits from the sale of the cover will be donated to the RWS Foundation. The cover is available for pre-order priced at £12.50 plus postage and packaging. Smiler sheets of 20 stamps are also available priced at £45.00 plus post and packaging, as well a mini sheet of stamps priced at £28 plus post and packaging.
