John attended St Albans School in Hertfordshire and on leaving became a prominent member of the Old Boys Association later joining a Founding Member of the Federation, the Old Albanian Lodge No 4999.
He was a very active member of the Federation, being Festival Secretary at the Annual Festival held at St Albans School in 1981 and in the same year being appointed one of the Joint Federation Secretaries, a position that he held until 1992. He served as Chairman of the Federation from 1992 to 1994 and was elected as a Vice President in 1996.
A humble, modest and kindly man, very reliable, and above all a great team player, he will be sadly missed by us all and our deepest sympathies are with his wife Mary and his family.

The Truro School Lodge hosted the Sixty Fourth Annual Festival at Truro School, Cornwall on Saturday 3rd September 2011 in the Province of Cornwall.
Truro School is situated on a hill in Trennier Lane with magnificent grounds overlooking the Truro River and City of Truro providing a wonderful setting to celebrate the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the Founding of the Lodge.
The visitors were received in the new Arts Centre and following lunch in the recently renovated and smart School Dining Room returned to the Centre for a short Annual General Meeting of the Federation and a Lodge Meeting attended by the Assistant Provincial Grand Masters of the Province W Bros Stephen Pearn and Peter Roberts together with other distinguished guests.
R W Bro Dr J W Daniel PGW, Past Grand Secretary, an Old Boy of Truro School, gave an entertaining talk entitled ‘Truro: The Cathedral, School and Lodge’ explaining and making reference to the many Masonic connections with the City and the Cathedral.
The members retired to be joined by the Ladies on their return from a conducted tour and afternoon tea at Truro Cathedral and after pre dinner drinks entered a beautifully decorated dining hall to enjoy further Cornish hospitality.
